ID License Card Point Demerit System
The new "Demerit" system becomes active September
2003. It will be good to familiarise yourself with it -
so is does not catch up with you when it becomes active. This
system will be applied countrywide! Demerit points
will be allocated infringements/ traffic offences. Penalty
units will determine the amount of the fine.
DEMERIT POINTS:
Each person has 0 points at the start of the system.
Each person can build up to 12 points. Every point exceeding
12 points = Suspension of licence! Points reduce
at 1 point every 3 "infringement free" months. Should
your licence be suspended 3 times, the licence will be CANCELLED.
If the vehicle belongs to a Juristic person (e.g.bank,
FML company etc) the Juristic person will not be given any
demerit points, but the PENALTY units will be X3!
PENALTY UNITS:
Motor vehicle not registered - Infringement - 10 penalty
units (R500.00) plus 2 demerit points. Driver does not
have his licence in the vehicle - Infringement - 10
penalty units (R500.00) plus 2 demerit points.
No Seatbelt - Infringement - 5 penalty units (R250.00)
plus 1 demerit point.
Not stopping at a stop sign - Infringement - 15 penalty
units (R750.00) plus 3 demerit points Overloading by
25% - Infringement - 25 penalty units (R1250.00) plus
3 demerit points Rear Lamps not working - Infringement
- 10 penalty units (R500.00) plus 2 demerit points
SPEED:
Up to 20% over the speed limit - R250.00 - No demerit
points.(e.g. 60kph limit, travelling up to 72kph
or 120 kph limit - travelling up to
144kph.)
21-30% over the speed limit - R500.00 - 1 demerit point.
(e.g. 60kph limit, travelling up to 78kph or 120 kph
limit - travelling up to
156kph)
31-45% over the speed limit - R750.00 - 2 demerit point.
(e.g. 60kph limit, travelling up to 87kph or 120 kph
limit - travelling up to
174kph.)
46-60% over the speed limit - R1 250.00 - 3 demerit
point. (e.g. 60kph limit, travelling up to 96kph or
120 kph limit - travelling up to
192kph..)
60% and over - no fine - Court! 4 demerit points!
