__________ Getting In __________

  • When approaching your vehicle walk with purpose and stay alert.
  • Approach your car with the key in hand. Look around, underneath and inside the car before getting in.
  • Be aware and take note of people asking for directions or handing out fliers. Trust your instincts - if something makes you feel uneasy ( trust your instincts) drive away and report the problem to the police

__________ On the Road __________

  • Keep your doors locked and windows rolled up ( at least 50mm from the top , if it's hot and you don't have air conditioning), no matter how short the distance or how safe the neighbourhood.
  • When you're coming to a stop, leave enough room to manoeuvre around other cars, especially if you sense trouble and need to get away. Keep escape routes in mind and sight
  • Endeavour to keep moving as much as possible. If your vehicle is not stationary you cannot be hijacked
  • Drive in the centre lane on your approach to an intersection to make it harder for would-be carjackers to approach the car.
  • Avoid driving alone if at all possible
  • Don't stop to assist a stranger whose car is broken down. Help instead by calling the police or emergency services to help.
  • Trust your instincts..
  • Remember a 1 km safety zone around your home – control all distractions
  • If followed have a plan – don’t head home!

__________ Getting Out __________

  • Park in well-lighted areas, near sidewalks or walkways. Avoid parking near dumping skips , wooded areas, large vans or trucks, or anything else that limits your visibility.
  • Never leave valuables in plain view, even if the car is locked. Put them in the boot or out of sight.
  • Try to park in a parking garage with an attendant. Ascertain which areas are patrolled regularly as some have more security presence than others.
  • Even if you're rushed, look around before you get out and stay alert to the surroundings and your location.

__________ If It Happens to You... __________

  • If the carjacker threatens you with a gun or other weapon, give up your car. Don't argue. Your life is worth more than a car.
  • Try and get away from the area as quickly as possible.
  • Try to remember what the carjacker looked like - sex, race, age, , special features, clothes. Try to be prepared to provide at least the following information about the offender(s):
    1. Age, race, height and weight;
    2. Hair style, beard, moustache;
    3. Notable characteristics (acne, scars, glasses, mental state, etc.);
    4. Clothing description;
    5. Location where last seen;
    6. Last known direction of travel:
