For the foreseeable future RAC has decided not to publicise statistics. This is for two primary reasons

1) Of the statistics that are available, these need to be seen in a particular context . In all probability there are factors which need to be considered when utilising these e.g.

  • These may be provincial
  • The sample study may be from a particular prison etc.

2) The second has to do with the "age" of official figures. These are a minimum of 6 months old which make attaching any meaningfull understanding very subjective.

We have however included some figures which help us understand what victims perceptions and the public at large are. These are less likely to change dramatically over a few months.

Research on Crime

  • Among vehicle owners, 14% of the respondents reported that hijacking was the crime they were most scared of, as opposed to 4% of the total sample
  • Most blacks and coloured interviwed were most afraid of being murdered; Indians feared housebreaking most while white South Africans feared hijackings most

Research on Law Enforcement

Views of police performance:
How are views affected by actual contact with police?

•Of those who said their opinion of the police changed after making contact, 54% reported an improvement, 35% said it got worse, 12% unchanged

•People in Free State, W Cape & N Cape most likely to report improvement
